"Call back and sent to the GP"
They ask you what is wrong and then they say they will call you back in 2 hours. Then they just send you to your GP. That is risky to life.
"They don't know my medical history"
They are supposed to refer you onto an appropriate service which they do but it's not good when you go to say Katie Road and they don't know your medical background. I would rather them find an appointment with my GP but that doesn't happen. I don't believe it's their fault.

"I was misdiagnosed."

I call when its an emergency. They prescribed me my medication and said they would send my prescription to the nearest pharmacy.
"Spent 48 hours ringing 111 numerous times."
Spend 48 hours liaising with 111 health advisors due to my mum being unwell.
1st call resulted in Ambulance service calling us back and asking us to go to an urgent care centre, after we explain my mums symptoms to her. I wish I got her name because she kind of just palmed us off and told us to get there before 8pm, didn’t tell us an appointment time or anything.
When I turned up to the centre they wouldn’t see my mum.
Called 111 again and spoke to someone else (who was lovely) explained what had happened and she advised to call 999 and speak to the ambulance service since they should have liaised with the urgent care team.
When I called 999 had to explain what happened again. They apologised and adviced to go to a&e.
Due to it not being an emergency it we didn’t want to waste anyone’s time. We went time and the symptoms you worse.
Around 9.30pm called 111 again and spoke to a health advisor, explained the situation for the 3rd time and she was helpful and empathetic and advised a clinician from the 111 service will call us.
We didn’t get a call till 4am from a Nurse. She quite rude and abrupt with no empathy towards my mum or me. We explained everything again and she did the same thing and referred us to the ambulance service again. She said i will refer you to an emergency ambulance, I tried to explain my mum doesn’t need an ambulance and that’s we went through this beforehand.
She was quite blunt with me and made seem like an ambulance would be coming and that we need to be alert so we can let the ambulance crew into the property and we have been waiting hours no one called or came. Until 8am another clinician called from the ambulance service.
I explained to them that I have already spoken to a clinician from the ambulance service and I don’t think it’s an emergency all she needs is antibiotics. They were kind and helpful and explained how the service actually worked
My mum and I are absolutely exhausted as we have been back and forth trying to get her seen by someone that can get her a prescription. I am just truly appalled by the lack of communication between 111 and the ambulance service. The nurse I spoke to has no regard for people’s feelings, and I can appreciate she was probably doing a night shift and was tired to but there is no need to speak to people in that tone and actually just get them to
Go round in circles again when clearly on your systems it shows what has been happening for the past 48 hours.
"Took a long time to answer"
They took a long time to answer the phone. I wait to speak with someone and I want help but when you wait a long time it's not helpful.

They've been very good. They give good information and advice sometimes. I have only used them a couple of times.

I've used them. I don't think they really understand when they're over the phone. They can give information but whether it's good is a different story.

They told me to come over but couldn’t move. They called paramedics and they made decision that they were not going to come but they did not tell me. 111 called me again and they said my only option was to go to the clinic. As a single mom during lockdown. Healthcare did not have a lot of options for me to be able to access care when I really needed it.

Luckily my husband who is a pharmacist and can prescribe was able to get the antibiotics she needed the next day. But even after explaining all the symptoms to NHS 111 and that my daughter had a lump on the back of her ear which would cause a serious infection that could lead to sepsis. Tried to contact my GP to get a prescription which ended up going straight to the pharmacy. They said they couldn't prescribe it without the doctor and said I had to call them. I ended up calling NHS 111 instead as the GP's lines were engaged and they were busy. When I got through to NHS 111 they said that because of my symptoms they would need to get the paramedics out to see me even though I said it was not needed. It was a waste of resources.

Sometimes they're more helpful than the GP because they ask all the questions to see what's wrong, but they're better with children when you can't get through to the GP.

"Was on it for too long"
Was on it for too long so ended the call.
"Get referred to service by GP"
They're good and I often get referred from the GP practice due to lack of appointments. I've used this service for my 3 year old daughter and they do help. But I would rather see my own doctor straight away rather than going through them to get an appointment.
Heartlands Hospital
"Appointment within 3 hours"
Phoned 111 for Scarlett fever, they referred us to Katie road. They gave us an appointment within 3 hours. Had to wait 40 mins for doctor to call back after telling them my issue.

"Referred to GP the same day"
My son had chest pains and when I explained the symptoms to them, they advised me to make a GP appointment, who I couldn't get through to. They then put me on hold and told me they'd made him an appointment for that same day. They were very helpful but why can't it be that easy when I'm trying to make an appointment.
"They were helpful"
Most of the time they were helpful. But once they put the phone down so I called 999.
"Navigates to the right care for you"
Very good. Someone always assures you and points you in the right direction. I've had incidences where I call them, they direct me and get me an appointment somewhere the same day. They're really good. You don't have to wait long either for someone to answer. It's convenient and they also pass on all your information to the service they've passed you on to.

Slow service. My mom used it once and it was so slow at responding she did get the help she needed but it took a long time.
"Bit of a joke"

They are fine and they get a GP to call me back.
"It did work for her."
My daughter used it and they told her to go straight to A&E and it did work for her. She ended up having an assessment.
"Don't get the help you need"
Too long, I find that you're just hanging on the line because they're too busy. And you don't get the help that you need.
"Don't think it works"
Rubbish, they always just send you to hospital for anything. I just don't think it works. If you ring for some advice they tell you to go to hospital. It just feels like they're overstretching the hospitals.

Used for my 7 years old grandson. Got the help he needed from them.
"Call back took until the next day"
I recently had to call 111 emergency service and was promised a referral to the Badger Clinic who didn't call back to the following day.
"Direct me to health service"
When I call, they just tell me to go to the Badger Clinic. They text me over an appointment time for the place and I go. Sometimes I don't think it's helpful. If I need a Nebuliser and they send me there, I know they're only going to send me to A&E.
"Called for a dental issue"
Called for a dental issue and was told to get in contact with Birmingham dental hospital to get treatment as could not afford cost of dental treatment. The line cut off and I didn’t bother again since lost the number.

"A bit drawn out process"
A bit drawn out process, waiting for a call back.
"Quicker than seeing my own doctor"
Doctor tells me to get in touch with the NHS 111 service because they have no more appointments. I ring 111 and they put me in touch with the out of hours. They give me a ring and it's a lot quicker than seeing my own doctor.
"Diagnosed without seeing me"
The nurse there had told me to pick up steroids from Katie Road, but it was okay. I did feel stressed about having to travel so far to get medication when my doctors is only around the corner from me. They also diagnosed me without seeing me.
"Really bad"
Annoying. They follow a questionnaire system and then get a GP to ring you back. Could be a few days later, it's really bad.
"They answered quickly"
Call 111 on weekends and needed some medicines for patient urgently. They answered quickly and sorted prescription. Which they send to late night pharmacy on Pershore Road.

"on the telephone for 2 and a half hours"
Broke my front tooth, contacted local dentist and because I was no longer a patient, I had to go through NHS 111 for an emergency. I was on the telephone for 2 and a half hour and didn’t get a referral because NHS 111 said they couldn’t contact the dentist and the dentist was saying they shouldn’t have any trouble. It ended up with me emailing my MP with a complain.
"They were good"
They were good, phoned him back in 20 mins and sent him to A&E.
"Useful and really good"
I find them quite useful if somethings happens. I have diabetes and didn't have enough meds. I rang 111 and they got me the prescription for the Asda pharmacy, they were really good.

I rang about a rash on my daughter, I sent pictures to the doctor and they said it was okay but I wanted her to be seen. So I rang them and they said someone will call back in 12 hours but never did. I think the service is overrun.
"Quick positive outcome"
We had come back off holiday and my daughter had phoned 111 about a cough. It did take a while to get through to speak to someone but by the time we'd left the airport she'd had a phone call back from a doctor who said she needed antibiotics and an hour after the initial phone call, my daughter had picked up her prescription.
"Good experience"
I did it online as the phone lines were really busy. When they called back, I managed to speak to a doctor from the Badger Clinic. He said if things get worse to go to A&E or ring my own doctors for an appointment to be seen face to face for a referral to be made to gynaecology.

"Very slow with advice / help"
Very slow with advice / help
"Quick and easy"
I contacted nhs 111 for myself and my son. The process was quick and easy and 2 appointments were given for attendance at walk in at sandwell hospital.
"Takes too long"
By the time you have listened too,and pressed various buttons, the patient could be dead.
"This is not OK."
I have always found my mediacal practice to be excellent but Covid restrictions have made it impossible to see a doctor about a problem with my achilles tendon. The 111 service told me that it was not urgent enough to talk to a medical practitioner. As I also have arthritis in the knee of the same leg I have been finding difficulty in walking so was mentally very upset about this lack of access to a doctor. This is not OK.
"Poor service"
Poor service
"Always, pleasant, helpful and efficient"
Always, pleasant, helpful and efficient. If they can't deal with my problem they arrange for a nurse or doctor to phone me to sort it out. This is a valueable service as during Covid it's difficult to speak to my GP.
"Great service NHS111"
Great service.
"Good service NHS111"
As could'nt t get through to Dr they gave me another phone number & twice told walk in centre I would be coming.
"They were very good"
They were very good. Obviously had passed information to GP, who phoned when they didn't see us the next day.
"Poor advice"
Poor advice
"Awful"
Phones with severe dental pain, have me the advice to call out of hours practices no joy. Went through 4 days of torture literally beside myself no joy. Ended up calling QE after being advised NOT to by 101 went to the macs ward had it drained antibiotics job done. 111 was awful no help literally just kept saying find an out of hours yet no one could fit me in.
"111 helped me greatly during the pandemic"
My daughter is constantly ill, 111 helped me greatly during the pandemic
"Awful NHS 111"
Awful, listen to a voice message for 5 minutes about covid and after speaking to a receptionist, then waiting for a call back from a nurse level staff member and then getting a call back from a doctor ... 5 hours the service is a complete waste of time and many in the medical profession have said the same to me
"Very good"
Very good
"Excellent service"
Excellent service , everytime I have called they are answered quickly and have great advice.
"Polite and very accurate in their help"
I have had several conversations with NHS 111 when determining whether injuries necessitate immediate hospitalisation or via GP for my family. All times the NHS 111 have been polite and very accurate in their help and thus a blessing for me and my family.
"Very stressful"
Very stressful to be honest. It was hard to work out the initial extent of the burn from the website description to look out for. So I called for more information. That wasn't a great experience. I felt that the nurse wasn't able to answer my concerns properly and then she offered me an appointment on the other side of the city. No clue as to geography. I had to terminate the call as it was stressing me out.
"Not enough trained professionals"
Having worked in care, and in a personal capacity I have had to call them many times. The waiting time for a professional to call back is always over an hour and during covid went up to 7 hrs at night. There are simply not enough trained professionals on this service. Could you make this a compulsory part of the final year of training of student doctors?
"Very slow to get back to you"
Very slow to get back to you. Had dental emergency and they took that long to get back to me by the time I answered dentists were closing and had to wait for next day.
"8 hours for a call back"
Last year I used this service for my 5 year old daughter who had tonsillitis I didn't have a call back for over 8 hours and they called at 11pm knowing we'd be in bed with a poorly 5 year old. I had to go to the walk in centre in the end for treatment on a Sunday this was prior to WMAS taking over and since they have the service is much improved
"Really helpful"
i've called twice and they've been really helpful, my sister has called them once and although the wait was quite long they did gel in the end
"Called me an ambulance immediately"
I called with a severe chest infection to ask if I should attend ED or the walk in centre and they called me an ambulance immediately.
"Kind and understanding"
I called them when I was worried for the safety of someone else. They arranged a welfare visit and were very kind and understanding
"Very distressing experience"
Very distressing experience on. The call responder did not take on board my problem, used an inappropriate tick list, was rude, and put the phone down. Did not listen when I tried to explain. Wished I'd not called but gone straight to A&E. Training in empathy for someone with an injury needed!
"Waste of time and unreliable"
My Brother told me to phone 111 first as he was in chronic pain with his kidney, I am a carer to my Mother who has Alzheimer's and Bedridden so can't be left. My Brother was doubled up with pain ,they said they have assessed him and told him to get to A&E within the next hour he told them of his situation he couldn't drive with pain and I couldn't take him "hence "couldn't leave Mom he said any chance of a Ambulance and they said No you will have to make your own way get a taxi it was 4 .00 am in the morning and we couldn't get hold of a taxi fortunately we managed to wake up my other Brother who lives 1/2 hour away he took my Brother to the hospital screaming in pain and left him at the hospital unable to go in with him my other Brother had to leave him we understand because of Covid but when my sick Brother was being transferred from one hospital to another by Ambulance the driver was appalled to hear what 111 had told him he said there would have been an Ambulance available and My Brother ended up having a serious operation on his kidney luckily he got to A&E in time to be given temporary treatment but it could have been far more serious because 111 would not Authorise an Ambulance. In future I personally will not be using this service as I found it to be a waste of time not only the Ambulance problem but the time it took for a qualified Nurse to ring us to tell us what we already knew ! Waste of time and unreliable. Further more the Ambulance driver doing hospital transfer told my Brother its a disgrace because at the time they told my Brother there wasn't a Ambulance available that Ambulance driver was called out to someone who had a headache not a serious kidney problem.
"Not helpful at all."
I had a particularly bad experience last October. I am in my 60s and live alone, but despite the fact that I had suddenly been struck by severe dizziness (akin to being on fairground ride) which rendered me unable to get up off the floor and caused me to vomit profusely every time I tried to stand. I dialed NHS 111 and they were not helpful at all.
"Poorly trained staff"
Spoke to 4 individuals and given incoherent advice throughout. One dental nurse advised that we took my severely disabled mother who was in severe pain with a broken tooth and exposed nerves to the Dental Hosptial as a walk in on a day that they were actually closed! Followed swiftly by another call who knew nothing about the previous call back ? (I thought these were all logged on a system!) referred us to an out of hours Emergency dentist that could not then treat her because of her physical disabilities, which we had already repeatedly advised all parties of. Then found also this 111 referred ‘emergency dental service’ was actually a private clinic and she (despite being on benefits entitling her to free care) was obliged to pay their private fees! Absolutely shocking dental service in this area! And very very poor support and service from 111.
"Poor advice given"
My twin brother was advised by 111 to not go to the hospital because there was no swelling on his foot. turns out he had fractured his metatarsal bone in his foot. Time frame between the phone call and going to GP was 2 weeks because his foot was in too much pain.
"Referred by 111 to out of area hospital"
I phoned NHS 111 due to symptoms of faecal impaction (already diagnosed). The on call Dr called an ambulance to take me to Sandwell Hospital, although I live in South Birmingham. I explained I had Borderline Personality Disorder and said I was feeling stressed due to the impaction; the Dr said that my mental health was not relevant to the referral. He sent the ambulance to a hospital I did not know, rather than the QE (or Heartlands) which I do. I felt extremely confused, resulting in me having a public breakdown in A&E.
Response from Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group, Customer Care Team
I can confirm the concerns raised in relation to NHS 111 by the patient were received by the Time2Talk team at SWBCCG and were acknowledged on the 1st October 2018, by my colleague.
I can confirm as Lead Commissioner for NHS 111 in the area, we are able to facilitate the complaint and liaise with the service on behalf of the patient. Consent has been requested from the patient, in order to provide us with the permissions we require to pass the complaint to the relevant services for formal investigation.
"The health advisor was brilliant"
My daughter recently had to call 111 due to being in the middle of a sustained asthma attack. The health advisor was brilliant, she put me onto a paramedic who advised me he was sending an ambulance. The hospital, paramedics and all NHS staff were amazing.
"Not very helpful"
Rang 111 as was told to by my GP practice to call them as they had no appointments. Spoke to 111 who assessed me as needing an urgent GP appointment within 2 hours. Then I phoned the GP back who had no appointments... Felt like I was stuck in a loop! Thankfully my GP did then phone me and arranged for me to be seen in the morning, but wish 111 had been more helpful signposting to out of hours care instead.
"Given wrong info & no call back"
I had a dental problem on Saturday and as my dentist wasn't open was advised by NHS 111 that I would need to see a dentist within 24 hours. They gave me two emergency dentists details and neither of them were open, and neither do emergency appointments. I phoned NHS 111 back and was told that someone would call me back within 2 hours. 6.5 hours later I had still not heard back, so had to phone them again. Luckily my symptoms had calmed down by the time they rung back. The dental nurse who called was unable to update systems so that wrong information is not given out to others.
