"Negative rehabilitation staff"

I was admitted for rehabilitation following a major stroke. Staff were negative and unmotivating and told my family that I was not going to get any better. It was very distressing being told this and almost made us question why I was sent there for rehabilitation if they didn't think I could get better. Despite their opinion and with the support of my family I have made a good progress with my recovery.

"Food was too expensive and no water dispenser"

Food was expensive for family of visitors and why is there no cool water dispenser in the restaurant for staff and visitors!
I know you want to make a profit by selling water bottles from the chiller but that is just not good service!

"Friendly, informative, empathy shown"

Visited lymphoedema clinic. Appointment with staff member who listened, acknowledged and showed full empathy when discussing future outcome. Gave advice and explained ongoing choices. Due to her empathy I felt listened to and encouraged. A big thank you to her for taking the time to listen and understand.

"Too much talking"

I was offered SALT and rehab. The only thing I would criticise them for is on the nights they were talking to each other, too much talking amongst themselves and there were zero to none of them as it was.

"Cannot fault the care"

The staff were fine, I see three different people for half an hour but it isn't enough to get to know someone. Then I've seen someone regularly for the past 2 years. It took three and a half years for diagnosis. I have appointments every 6 months and my medication sent to my local pharmacy. I cannot fault the care here.

"Initially good, went downhill"

Various departments are better than others, SLT V.good,
Physio Poor, they gave up on my partner, suffered brain injury, would get agitated through no fault of his own, they just stopped said he was abusive and upset other patients in the gym, it’s so sad because he was progressing well, they took the opportunity away from him. General care some are good, others lazy, some just enjoyed winding him up.

"Some patients were violent"

My husband was on a ward here not long before he died. I went to visit him and pressed the button to be let in. Some of the patients were violent and I didn't like him being on that ward with people with different levels of dementia. I was happy when he went into a care home.

"Extremely good hospital"

I was an inpatient at Moseley Hall Hospital for about 6 weeks. I was taken to Moseley Hall Hospital for rest and physiotherapy after I had suffered a spinal stroke. I am a coeliac as I have an allergy to gluten. The head of the hospital dieticians and catering department came to see me every day to work out my menu for the day. She was extremely kind and nothing was too much trouble. The nursing sisters on ward 4 were kindness itself and their nursing staff were also extremely kind to me. The physiotherapy unit for ward 4 helped me considerably as well. Moseley Hall Hospital is an extremely good hospital and I was treated extremely well there for which I am very grateful.

Provider Response June 30, 2021

"Terrible restricted from speaking to patient"

My stepdad was referred here after having a head injury however myself and family have been restricted from speaking to my stepdad after his next of kin told the hospital to stop contact with anyone but him. The hospital have done exactly this and now my stepdad is left without his family support. They have took away his rights. The nurses do not help and will not allow us to have contact with him.

"ward 8 night staff absolutely shocking"

My mothers first night on this ward she was pulled about by her arms which hurt her, told to wipe her own bottom when she has no left side movement made to sit up the bed by herself, when I was on the phone and asked for the nurses name in question I was told her name was forgot, disgusting treatment for a elderly patient whose had a stroke

Provider Response December 3, 2018

Dear Ms Butler

Thank you for raising your concerns about your mother's care and treatment when she was admitted to Moseley Hall Hospital. I am very sad to read about the lack of care and compassion you have described, and for the lack of support you received from a nurse when you called the ward.

In order to address this matter with the staff concerned, it would be really helpful to know more detail (your mother's name, date of admission, if she is able to describe the nurse involved). Please do contact me at your earliest convenience by email Alison.last@bhamcommunity.nhs.uk or phone 0121 466 7128 and I will be pleased to listen to the experience in more detail.

If you prefer, you may wish to request a meeting with the Team Leader and / or the Matron for the ward, and for this you would speak to any member of the ward team, or phone 0800 917 2855

I look forward to hearing from you at your convenience, and hope the remainder of your mother's admission is a more positive experience than the first 24 hours.

With kind regards

Alison Last
Associate Director of Patient Experience
