Consultation by: Department of Health and Social Care
The Department of Health and Social Care consulted on proposals to widen the range of medicines that Optometrists and Contact Lens Opticians can supply directly to patients. Healthwatch Birmingham & Solihull responded in support of measures that could improve access to timely care in community settings. We highlighted the need for clear referral pathways for patients who cannot be treated in the community, accessible information about the changes, and straightforward feedback and complaints routes. We also raised concerns about the potential for increased inequalities and the cost of medicines acting as a barrier for people on low incomes.

Healthwatch Birmingham & Solihull’s response
The Department of Health and Social Care consulted on proposals to extend the range of medicines that optometrists and contact lens opticians can supply directly to patients. Healthwatch Birmingham and Solihull responded to ensure that the experiences and needs of local people inform changes to community eye care.
Improving access to timely treatment
We supported the proposals, recognising that enabling more treatment in community optometry could help reduce delays and unnecessary referrals.
Clear pathways and information
We emphasised the need for accessible patient information and clear onward referral routes for individuals whose conditions cannot be managed in community settings.
Addressing inequalities and affordability
We raised concerns that costs may act as a barrier for people on low incomes and stressed the importance of ensuring that reforms do not widen existing inequalities.
Ensuring robust feedback routes
We recommended clearer, well publicised feedback and complaints processes so people can raise concerns about their care.
